Great River Road Trail

The Great River Road Trail in Illinois travels beneath towering bluffs, with spectaular views of the Mississippi River. This 21-mile trail starts in the old river town of Alton, passes through the tourist mecca of Grafton, and ends at the rustic lodge of Pere Marquette State Park.

Much of this trail uses highway shoulder, separated from traffic by a rumble strip. This makes for a good riding surface, but cyclists who are not comfortable riding close to high-speed traffic might not enjoy this arrangement.
