Heartland State Trail

Length: 49 miles
Surface: Paved

The Heartland State Trail runs 49 miles between Cass Lake on the northern end, to Park Rapids on the south end.

A former railroad route, the Heartland Trail is mostly flat. The surface is paved.

The Paul Bunyan Trail and Heartland Trail run concurrently for eight miles around the town of Walker. Headed south, the Heartland splits off from the Paul Bunyan Trail about six miles south of Walker, and 16 miles north of Hackensack.

South of Walker, the Heartland Trail passes through the towns of Akeley, Nevis, Dorset, and Park Rapids. You'll find many businesses and services in these towns, and Akeley claims the "World's Largest Paul Bunyan Statue". The distance from the split with Paul Bunyan to the southern end at Park Rapids is around 21 miles.

To the north, the Paul Bunyan and Heartland Trails split just north of Walker, and south of Kabekona Bay. From here the Heartland Trail continues north for 20 miles, while the Paul Bunyan Trail follows a more northwesterly direction. The Heartland Trail does not pass through any other major towns between Walker and its northern end at the town of Cass Lake.
