Virginia Creeper Trail Elevation Chart

How hilly is the trail?
You'll experience a lot of elevation change along the Virginia Creeper Trail, but it's mostly slow and steady climbs or descents as opposed to hills. Which is not surprising for a former railroad route.

As you can see in the chart below, there is a 2000 foot ascent over the roughly 25 miles from Alvarado to the eastern end near Whitetop.

The solid sections in the chart are paved, and the striped sections are unpaved.

Elevations (feet):
  • 2,020 Abingdon
  • 1,940 Watauga
  • 1,750 Alvarado
  • 1,920 Damascus
  • 2,365 Taylors Valley
  • 3,190 Green Cove
  • 3,595 White Top
